BP Race Series 2: Electric Boogaloo
And so another race series begins. With windy conditions in the Valley it wasn’t looking good for a race that had already been delayed once. But it seems Mother Nature and I have kissed and made up. It was a little cold but conditions were ripe for competition.
The racers were first asked to write down as many Lambert Trails as they could from memory. Each trail name listed was worth one minute off their time in the race. They traded the list to me for a map of Lambert with the locations of the five Scavenger Hunt items marked. There was no defined route, just find all five locations as quickly as possible and bring back the items from those locations.
The items were foam “Aqua Noodles”, an egg, a Shhhhasta, t-shirts(for keepsies), and a lei . A five minute penalty was imposed for breaking the egg. Wes’s plan of putting the egg in his water bottle probably sounded like a good idea at the time, but he was the only one who took an egg penalty. So even though he finished first, the egg penalty, offset his eight minute bonus from the trail names. Jake came in five minutes after Wes, but managed ten trail names and took the lead.
But there,… in the distance,…Paul Zimm-the-Man was coming in hot. Just twenty seconds behind Jake. Would this be the Jake’s undoing? In a word, Yes.
Paul had listed 16 trail names, and not even cheated by listing Rodeo Up, and Rodeo Down. The rest of the pack was too far back to overcome the deficit and Paul brought home the gold. Not bad for a middle aged accountant. He was awarded a Blackburn AirFix Tool (A $36.99 value) for first place, and since I forgot to stash a booby prize, he won the booby contest by naming the most trails. This garnered him some bike gear for his newish-to-mountain-biking daughter.
Thanks to everybody that came out, there will be more races to be announced. And they will be of the dumb, screw-around variety so don’t take them too seriously.
P.S. Sorry for no pics, I had a minor electronic’s disaster and didn’t manage to get any.
So here’s a picture of me and my wife poolside from last weekend’s trip.
